Sri Lankan Anotatta Murals: Object-Specific Water Worlds

Eighteenth-century Sri Lanka

Eighteenth-century Kandyan painting turns Anotatta into a dramatic Himalayan visual world. Dambulla Cave 3 records four animal-mouth waters and an elaborated river; Kottimbulvala creates a ceiling-scale Himalayan field. These are powerful Sri Lankan witnesses, but their details must not reconstruct unreviewed murals or earlier texts.

This is another reason the comparison panel avoids a universal animal compass. A viewer should ask which mural, cave, and date.

What remains out of bounds

The archive records Mulkirigala but lacks enough reviewed detail to reconstruct a plan. Kottimbulvala is documented as a Himalayan ceiling world, but unseen detail remains unseen.
