Saratthadipani and the Anotatta Dossier
The medieval Saratthadipani contains a connected Anotatta and Himavanta dossier, but it is not the earlier Samantapasadika and cannot repair that text silently.
What this page establishes: Source identity is the first condition of historical comparison.
The identity correction
A major project lesson was that a rich Anotatta dossier once treated as if it belonged directly to the Samantapasadika was actually drawn from the medieval Saratthadipani layer. That correction matters.
It does not make the dossier useless. It makes the dossier more valuable, because now it can be read as what it is: a later Vinaya subcommentarial exposition with explicit inherited material.
What the dossier contributes
The Gate 2 review found positive cosmographic and geographic assertions, route readings, seven-lake material, Chaddanta material, and a source-native entity registry. It also found many lexical controls, false positives, contextual uses, and duplicate query rows.
That blend is exactly why the dossier needed controlled extraction. A search hit is not a map claim until its immediate context has been classified.
What remains bounded
The work is compilational in important places. The Chaddanta subsection has an explicit dependency on the Chaddantajataka commentary. Some dimensions remain ambiguous and were not converted into modern radius or diameter claims.
The public site should use the dossier as a medieval evidence layer, not as a backdated early Pali atlas.
Evidence notes
- Gate 2 classified 387 diagnostic rows with no unresolved rows.
- Thirty-two bounded occurrence records were drafted in the partial-to-complete workflow.
- The dossier established connected drainage material but also many nonspatial and lexical controls.
Sources and boundaries
Saratthadipani evidence is strong within its own layer and unsafe when silently projected backward.

Saratthadipani Gate 2 package
History 5 occurrence records, claim ledger, variants, and negative evidence
Defines the medieval drainage dossier as a separate source family with explicit dependencies.

Samantapasadika Gate 1 and Gate 2 records
History 1 controlled extraction; History 5 comparison boundary
Separates main text, explicit quotation, apparatus, false positives, and later subcommentarial material.

Project synthesis
Himavanta cross-history research archive
histories/ plus history-09 gate records; source families frozen independently
Used only as a synthesis layer. It cannot promote a later witness into an earlier source family.
